Perfecting The Art of Smoothie Bowls

Who doesn’t love smoothie bowls? They are versatile, delicious, refreshing, healthy and fun to make! They are definitely our favourite thing to serve in a Coconut Bowl, so here are some of our tips for getting the perfect consistency and flavour!

1. Choose your frozen or fresh fruit and/or veggies

Options are endless but some of our favourites are:

  • Fruit- Banana, berries, pineapple, mango, kiwi, acai, dragonfruit
  • Veggies- Spinach, kale, avocado, cucumber, beetroot, carrot

Aim to use as much frozen fruit as possible (especially banana!)—this helps create the perfect creamy consistency without having to add a lot of ice, which equals lost flavour.

2. Choose your liquid

  • Milk (Dairy/ non dairy)
  • Coconut water

It’s important to remember with adding liquid into your blender, less is more! Typically, it is good to stick to ratio of 1 part liquid to 8 parts frozen fruit. This will give you a thick creamy soft-serve like texture.

3. Add in flavour and nutrition boosters (optional)

  • Cacao
  • Protein powders
  • Superfood powders
  • Matcha
  • Nut butter
  • Tofu
  • Yoghurt

4. Combine all your ingredients of choice

(sticking to the 8 to 1 ratio) in a high-speed blender or food processor (we recommend a Vitamix!) and blend until smooth. You may need to add more liquid to loosen up the mixture or you may need to add more frozen fruit or ice to thicken it up. 

5. Beautify your bowl with toppings!

  • Fresh or frozen fruit
  • Nuts (almonds, brazil nuts, cashews, walnuts, pecans)
  • Seeds (chia, flax, pumpkin, hemp)
  • Cacao nibs or dark chocolate shavings
  • Dates
  • Dried coconut
  • Granola
  • Nut butter
  • Maple syrup
  • Spices (cinnamon, turmeric, nutmeg)

Extra tips!

Prep fresh fruit topping before you blend. As smoothie bowls will start to melt pretty quickly after being blended, it a good idea to have all of your toppings pre-prepped so you can add the finishing touches quickly and dig straight into your bowls when it's nice and cold, thick and frosty!

Make it colourful! We really do eat with our eyes, so creating a bowl looks great is just as important as tasting delicious!

Serve your smoothie bowl in a Coconut Bowl of course! Coconut bowls give your smoothie bowl extra character and charm, plus it really does make you feel like you’ve been transported to a tropical island in the south pacific!!
